Routenburn Golf - The Course

KA leisure

This hilly, moorland course offers the golfer an unforgettable experience.

Routenburn Golf Course, opened 1914, is a fantastic example of a James Braid designed golf course. Although not the longest course, at 5262 yards, this hilly, moorland course offers a challenge for all levels of golfers as well as some breathtaking views over to Arran, the Cumbraes and beyond.

From sloping greens, to blind tee shots, Routenburn has it all. Golfers of all abilities enjoy the tricky par 3’s, testing par 4’s and deceptively difficult par 5’s, however breaking par of 68 is never an easy task… just ask our members!

But concentrating on the golf may be difficult… the views are among the finest in Scottish golf.

Course History

Largs Town Council purchased 139 acres of land at Routenburn in 1913 for a knockdown price of £4,000 and decided to take advantage of the growing popularity of golf by building a golf course which, according to the Provost of the day, "will be one of the best assets Largs will possess".

the golf course is one of the best I have ever been over and the different panoramic views unfolded to the eye as hole after hole is reached are not to be surpassed even in Bonnie Scotland. - Course Designer James Braid

The Council’s view was that a new 18 hole course would "draw a considerable revenue to Largs over the years" as the only alternative course in the area, Largs Golf Club, possessed only 9 holes.

Employing renowned golf course designer James Braid to "lay out the course" for a sum of £1,000, Braid, a designer of many golf courses, commented that, "the golf course is one of the best I have ever been over and the different panoramic views unfolded to the eye as hole after hole is reached are not to be surpassed even in Bonnie Scotland".

Routenburn Golf Course officially opened in 1914 and continues to provide to this day, affordable golf and breathtaking views of Arran, the Cumbraes and beyond.
